Surgery

Surgery went well. It was a fracture of the femur that they secured with a plate. A fairly common break, but usually among elderly. I did just turn 25 last week. I'm going to be at the hospital for a few days until I can hobble out of here. Missing Pais Vasco is going to be tough, but I don't have a choice. Perhaps I'll be racing again in May. I sure hope so. On the bright side, the healing process is fairly simple from now on. It'll just take time for the bone to heal. My girlfriend comes over here in a little more than a week, so I hope I'm able to move around a little to enjoy it with her.

Hey Blake,

hopefully all that Nordic Skiing at Eldora helped protect your hip/femur from worse injury!!

Sorry to hear about the accident, and best wishes for a speedy and complete recovery.

Aww man...I've been there! Medical technology these days is amazing. I got screwed together just over two years ago. Since then I've ran a marathon & I'm now training for an Ironman.

Good luck on your recovery & DO WHAT YOUR DOCTORS TELL YOU!

Hey Blake,
Best wishes for a speedy and painless recovery. All you pro guys are breaking bones like crazy this year; it must be something in the water!

Hi Blake,

I just read about your injury on Lance's Twitter site.

I broke my hip/femur riding in Sydney just last Thursday. I am fit and got out of hospital the following day after 3 screws were inserted.

I wish you all the best, and for what it's worth, can empathise with you.

Do what the doctor says as getting the blood flow back to the head of the femur is paramount - you definitely don't want a hip replacement!!!

Hi Blake,
I'm Maynard Hershon from Denver. I fell off my bicycle and broke my femur last August. Three screws and a titanium rod. I'm older but I fell on a large decorative rock next to the bike path, dammit.

Take the pain meds, Blake, and move around as much as you can. I tried to tough it out and probably slowed my recovery. Good luck, speedy recovery... mhershon@gmail.com

Add my name to the chorus of well wishers who've 'been there'... at 52 years old I had a compound fracture of my left femur and radial fracture of my hip. One titanium rod through my femur and pin through the hip and presto... 6 months later back on the bike. 7 years later and it's like it never happened. You'll be back better then ever!

Hey man, I did EXACTLY this same thing on December 8th. Was riding in 4 weeks and back near 100% in 8 weeks. You'll be fine. They'll bolt you together good and off you'll go.
Yoga after 3 weeks helped me a ton with stability.
Indoor trainer everyday not doing yoga.
Outdoor road bike in 5 weeks and back on mountain bike in 6 weeks.
I wrote about my recovery.

They will rebuild you!

Bummer to hear about the news. Don't let it get you down- you still have lots of cycling in your future. Get pissed and start writing down names!

Life is funny, broke my femur on a training ride Sunday (SUV hit me). Its at the end by the knee. No surgery right now because the bone is in "pieces" and there is nothing to screw together. 6-8 weeks of crutches. What did they tell you about recovery?

Hi,
I broke my Neck of Femur (NoF) about 2 years ago in late March. Rehab after surgery and 6 weeks non weight bearing was hard work.

I was able to gain my fitness back and began a reasonable training load in August and raced again in October.

My main issues have been ITB tendonitis around the area of the plate. But all is good now and I am as good as before on the bike.

If I had my time again I'd get in a rehab pool ASAP, and I would have focused more on physio rather than riding the bike in the 6-10 weeks post op.

Tim.

Blake, sitting here with a titanium rod in my femur after losing a battle with a truck while out training, I'm thinking that given your history of broken bones, we should start some kind of support group for riders who now have to sit around or lie down. I'm watching my calf and hamstring muscles disappear.

Not sure what to call the group. Any ideas?

Take those pain pills. Pain really slows the recovery as your body expends all that energy to combat the pain, instead of energy to heal.
